Some socially conscious enthusiastic youngsters such as Dharamshi Bhavanji, Ghelabhai Hansraj, Pranlal Mehta, Kantilal Vora & Ramniklal Munshi in view of uniting people during independence movment & serving common citizens of Matunga gave a thougt to establish a social organization. Thus SHREE MATUNGA GUJARATI SEVA MANDAL was established on auspecious day of 2-6-1935, under the presidentship of Prof. Vrajlal D. Chhaya. The aim was to help people in the field of medical, educational, social & cultural activities, irrespective of caste, creed, religion or language.

At the same time the Mandal stared attending to public grievances and helped to resolve public complaints against administration by meeting and represanting them and even by organizing public protests. Thus members & workers got chance to come forward in public life through the Mandal in social & political field. Through the popularity of the Mandal & personal efforts of various members, Mr. Liladhar Pasoo Shah was elected MLA & M/S Nanalal D. Mehta & Ravjibhai Ganatra were honoured with Mayorship of Numeno Uno City of India i.e. Mumbai which was earlier known as Bombay.
